Anyone can file an unemployment claim, but before determining if a claim is valid, the State must look at the individual’s employment history. Each State Unemployment Agency must look at a period from when the individual first applies for their claim; this is called a Base Period.

A Base Period is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters from when the individual filed their claim.

This period determines:

Once all this is established, the State Agency will then send the unemployment claims to the individuals’ former Employers. If the individual is filing for partial unemployment, their existing Employer may also receive a claim.
