House Bill 7 (HB7) states that an individual is not disqualified for unemployment benefits if the individual’s separation from employment was caused by the individual being called to provide service in the uniformed services or service in the Texas military forces.

This bill further states that unemployment benefits computed on benefit wage credits of an employee or former employee may not be charged to the account of an employer if the employee’s last separation from employment before the benefit year was caused by the employee being called to provide service in the uniformed services or the Texas military forces.

The measure will be active as of September 1, 2021.

How does this affect my organization? 

HB 7 does allow claimants to collect benefits if their separation resulted from being called to provide military service. Fortunately, the bill also indicates that employers will not be charged for benefits collected due to these types of separations. There is no negative impact on Texas employers as a result of this legislation.
