On Monday, December 14, North Dakota announced a new partnership with ID.me. The partnership was created to deter fraudulent claims activity at the beginning of a filed Unemployment claim. The new partnership between UI ICE and ID.me will be integrated on December 17th.
What does this mean for the claimant?
ID.me serves to have claimants verify their identity before the filing of a claim. The claim verification process will be applied to claims retroactively, therefore previous, as well as new claimants, will be required to create an ID.me account to verify identity. ID.me representatives will be available via video call to help troubleshoot and claimants should be directed to ID.me, if needing assistance.
What does this mean for me, as an employer?
No action is necessary on the part of the employer, but this integration serves to be a great step for all parties involved in unemployment. For employers and TPAs, this is a line of defense against receiving fraudulent claims and in turn, will reduce the number of claims we are currently receiving. This will also lessen the number of fraudulent claims at the state level, lessening their current workload and ensuring a more accurate tax rate.
We have not seen any other states implementing any similar measures to deter fraudulent claims but hope to see and report more on state security, in the future.
