Empowerment Zone and Indian Employment programs provide 2 years of retroactive credits for certain businesses.

The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2020 provided a one-year extension for WOTC and retroactive extensions for Empowerment Zone (EZ) and Indian Employment credits (IEC) through 12/31/2020. EZ and IEC expired on 12/31/2017 so businesses in the Empowerment Zones are now eligible to claim WOTC credit of up to $2,400 for hiring an individual during the last two years that lived in these zones. There is also an additional $3,000 federal tax credit for employers with facilities in the EZ that hire individuals who work and live in the Empowerment Zone.

The Indian Employment Credit offers a credit of up to $4000 to employers who hire an enrolled member of an Indian tribe or the enrolled member’s spouse.  To qualify, substantially all the services must be performed by such an employee within an Indian reservation, and the employee’s principle residence must be on or near the reservation where the services are performed.
