Fraudulent claims had a significant presence in Florida a couple of years ago, and continue to be a problem nationwide occasionally.  How do you know if a claim is fraudulent?  You may not recognize the name of the employee, or you may recognize the name, but know they still work for you.

If either of these instances occurs, you should immediately inform your claims analyst and Account Executive that you believe the claim is fraudulent. Don’t worry if you miss this step because it usually occurs anyway since CCC will be reaching out for separation information for an employee who you know is currently working.

If we do receive an unemployment claim and you, the employer, knows that the employee is currently working, you should confirm with the particular employee that they have not filed an unemployment claim.  If the employee indicates that they did not file a claim, then you should let your claims analyst or AE know this. They will then respond to the claim stating the claimant is still employed full time and that this is a suspected fraudulent claim, as the employee has confirmed that they did not file an unemployment claim.

At the same time, we advise that the employee contacts the Benefit Payment Control Unit at the State.  The contact information will be listed on your State Unemployment website, for example, as indicated in the excerpt below from the Tennessee State Unemployment Website.

CCC has an entire auditing department that audits the benefit charges for our clients.  If a charge does hit an employer’s account and is marked as “still employed full time/ fraudulent claim” then our team will know to protest the benefit charges.  Our auditing department will also protest any charges where a claim is processed as “no record of employment.”  Many of our auditing team members have experience working with the State of Florida, with a similar situation and will closely work with and monitor any such charges in any other State.
