dispute-credit-card-chargeOne of my client’s, a Professional Employer Organization (PEOs) recently asked me: Does Corporate Cost Control audit our unemployment benefit charge statements?

PEO companies, like all employers, are concerned their benefit charges are accurate, and their accounts are properly credited, as the state agencies use year-end benefit charges to calculate their tax rates.

Employers often do not realize, when the state agencies fail to credit their accounts for claims reversed in their favor and/or errors go unchecked, their unemployment tax rates may increase unnecessarily.    In fact, the US Dept of Labor publishes statistics in this area and has reported, the national error rate of unemployment overpayment ranges from 2.5% to 22.6%.  Because of this, it is imperative that charge verification is made an important focal point of unemployment compensation programs.

CCC’s claims management system has been designed to audit all aspects of a claim to ensure that our client’s accounts are charged accurately.  Whenever possible, we assign actual liability to each claim, instead of simply relying on the state-wide averages.

An audit report is generated when an error occurs.  Each error is investigated and protested to the state agency.  A suspense date is created by the system, and pending credit reports are generated. This allows us to monitor state responses in a timely manner.  Many of our clients find that the annual credits that result from this comprehensive audit exceed their annual fee.

All protested charges are tracked on our claim and tax system, and the total of outstanding protests is available to CCC’s tax department when the tax verification process begins.  Charge totals on the annual tax rate notices are compared to the audited totals in our system, and appeals are filed if a match does not occur.
