During the 2016 rate year, the rate schedules and multipliers used by the agencies either stayed the same or went down with the exception of five states that increased their unemployment tax rates.  What is expected for the 2017 rate year?   Let’s review the fourteen states have issued unemployment tax rate notices.

GiftMoney As of the date of this newsletter, fourteen states have issued rates for the 2017 rate year: California, Colorado, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin.   Of these fourteen states, six of the states decreased their rate schedules or multipliers used in the computation.  Nevada was the only state to increase their rate schedule.     Florida is expected to issue shortly with lower multipliers than last year.

By the end of December, all except nine states plan on issuing their unemployment tax rate notices for 2017.   The protest deadlines are usually not very long.   There are also joint account and voluntary contribution opportunities that could save an employer tax dollars if carefully analyzed.   If you receive a 2017 unemployment tax rate notice directly from the state, please fax or scan a copy of the notice to your Tax Analyst so we may review the numbers the state used in the computation and determine if there are any opportunities to further reduce the unemployment tax rate for 2017.

It is of utmost importance that you inform us of an acquisition, reorganization or merger that takes place within your organization.    Often times, employers pay more money than they should whenever a transaction of this nature takes place.    Also, many states combine the experience of predecessors as of the issuance of the new rate.    It is mandated by each state to inform them promptly of an acquisition, reorganization or merger on a timely manner.   If you need assistance in this area, please contact your CCC Tax Analyst.
