If you had to list a few of the common reasons why a person would apply for unemployment insurance, would family caregiving come to mind?

Across the country, more people are placed in tough financial situations due to the demands of their families. Caregivers rely heavily on the understanding and assistance of their employers, but only a small amount actually receive benefits.

According to a recent AARP report, there are more than 65 million caregivers in the U.S. today, while 10 percent of that segment have had to leave their jobs due to caregiving. A number of states also have UI laws that accommodate caregivers in this situation.

Employers across the country may want to keep caregivers in mind when planning for unemployment insurance costs.
