The end of the year is the time for resolutions, and in North Dakota, one that can be checked off the list is a reduction in unemployment insurance tax rates.

According to The Associated Press, employers can expect to see lower rates for 2015. The new range will be from the lowest possible – at 0.10 percent – all the way to 9.70 percent. By comparison, 2014’s tax rate ranged from 0.16 percent to 9.76 percent.

The tax rate in each state is closely tied to its local unemployment insurance trust fund. This system is designed to cover benefits for the jobless, and employers are responsible for contributing a portion of those funds through taxes. Following the Great Recession, the high number of unemployed put a strain on state trust funds, and as a result, businesses had to pick up the slack.

The decline in tax rates in North Dakota is a sign that the economic situation in the state is stable. Cheri Giesen, executive director of Job Service North Dakota, explained that more than 66 percent of all employers in the state will be taxed at the lowest rate of 0.10 percent, The AP reported. She added that the new rates will help create a more stable tax environment for employers.

North Dakota maintains low jobless rate
Over the past several years, North Dakota has been one of the best states in terms of its unemployment rate and economic conditions.

“More than half of all employers will be taxed at the lowest possible rate in 2015.”

Job Service North Dakota reported that the jobless rate was at 2.1 percent in October, only slightly above the 2 percent noted in September 2013. The national rate, on the other hand, was at 5.5 percent for the month. In October 2014, there were only 8,755 unemployed adults in the state, while the labor force came in at 417,602.

“October has historically produced the lowest unemployment rate of the year as seasonal activities, such as construction and agricultural activities, are fully engaged in project wrap-ups,” Michael Ziesch, Labor Market Information manager, said in a statement.

Overall, the positive trends in North Dakota appear to be holding steady, which is good news for employers in the state moving forward.
