In Illinois, a new job training grant has been awarded to help further reduce the unemployment rate and provide employers a larger selection of skilled workers to choose from.

The grant, from the U.S. Department of Labor, will provide nearly $6.2 million to CompTIA Workforce Development, an information technology company based in Illinois. There is currently a high demand for IT workers in the state, with almost 40,000 new job openings formed during the first three months of 2014 alone.

Ideally, the grant will help the state train out-of-work residents in this field. This will then provide employers better candidates, with a lower chance of early termination and unemployment claims.

“Work-based training is a key project component because it provides much-needed income during the training period and helps participants quickly re-enter the workforce, learn new skills and obtain employment that offers long-term potential for advancement and growth,” explained Gretchen Koch, executive director of workforce development programs for CompTIA.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported that June unemployment rates ticked down in all metro areas, with jobs added in six of those regions. This trend is an indication of a stronger economy in the state.

At Corporate Cost Control, we work closely with employers across the country to better manage the nuances of unemployment insurance. Legislation changes on the state level could impact you today, and we welcome any questions or concerns you may have on a wide range of topics.
