The beginning of January 2014 marked the end of unemployment insurance benefits for America’s long-term jobless. Since that time, Congress has worked diligently to come up with a viable solution, but any progress has been slowed by opposition within both the House and Senate.

Recently, House Speaker John Boehner expressed concern about the implementation of the current proposed bill in Congress. A letter from the National Association of State Workforce Agencies raised concerns that problems could occur on the state level, further compounding the issues. This has temporarily caused a rift in Congress about the passing of the bipartisan bill aimed at extending unemployment insurance benefits.

According to Roll Call, the Democrats in the Senate are united on the issue. Therefore, any delays could come about between Republicans, including Rep. Boehner. While it is expected to pass a vote in the Senate, the House is less likely to receive the bill favorably. As a result, it may take even longer to reinstate long-term benefits to out-of-work Americans.

The bill would alter how these payments would be made, The Washington Post reported. For example, fees would be extended on goods coming into the country via U.S. Customs, and pension contributions would be shifted to alleviate some of the financial burden.

At Corporate Cost Control, we work closely with employers across the country to better manage the nuances of unemployment insurance. Legislation changes on the state level could impact you today, and we welcome any questions or concerns you may have on a wide range of topics.
